19 CONTINENTAL, GERMANY At the Contidrom north of Hanover, the tire ma- nufacturer Continental has put the world's first fully automatic, weather-independent indoor tire test facility into operation. In a 300-m-long, fully air-conditioned hall, an unmanned vehicle is accelerated to up to 120 km/h over a distance of 100 m via a linear drive similar to a roller coaster and then braked fully automatically on interchangeable road surfaces. In this process, roadbeds with dry and wet surfaces can be tested. Vollert developed the interchangeable road surfaces for this globally unique project. The challenge was to move the pavement sec- tions, weighing more than 100 t, 3.7 m wide and 75 m long, absolutely parallel and with millime- ter precision in transverse movement. The ex- change of a test section thus takes only 10 to 15 minutes. You can find more information about this project here: vollert.de REFERENCE PROJECT 1 1 100,000 brake tests can be carried out annually in the 300 m long hall under constant conditions, regardless of weather conditions 2 14 transverse lift trucks, 420 roller blocks and 56 friction wheel drives ensure the transport of the 100 t roadway cassettes of the world's first indoor tire test facility 3 There are five different asphalt surfaces available for the brake tests 1 3 2
